Either if you like football statistics or blue sharks, you most probably already heard about Gianluca Cugini.

It’s not by chance that this Italian is the most successful person in what relates to football statistics and blue sharks statistics. After all, when you do what you love, your work becomes your life.

Gianluca Cugini has always love statistics as well as football.

He even attended some football competitions when he was still a child.

So, the desire was already there and his dream started to become true when he worked at the FIFA World Cup when he was just 22. Despite the young age, Gianluca never stopped working and developing new techniques that make him one of the most renowned football statistics expert in the world.

In 1987  he started to work for DATASPORT, a company that provides services for various sporting events all over the world. When he left, he started working for the International Federation Football History & Statistics (IFFHS).

In 2002, Gianluca was assigned to be the head of Italy’s IFFHS division. He remained there up until 2012. From 2012 to 2013, he served as World Executive Board of the IFFHS. Gianluca was, in fact, the first Italian in the Football History (IFFHS).

If there is one thing that Gianluca is really proud of is that he was able to do football statistics at all levels. From the FIFA World Cup and FIFA World Cup Clubs to the FIFA Confederations CUP and UEFA Euro Championship, UEFA Super Cup, Champions League, Seria A and Italy Cup, Italy Super Cup, FIFA Century Club, FIFA World Cup Sub 20, and even the Olympic Games.

However, what really gave him more pleasure was when he was working for the Azzurri at the FIFA World Cup, his first job.

One of the results of his amazing career, Gianluca has been in more than 110 countries, spread through the 7 continents. Through his travels, he was able to discover a third interest – blue sharks.

Well, it was not actually discovered since Gianluca has always had a passion for these animals every since he was a child.

His passion became especially stronger after he saw the “Men and sharks” documentary by Bruno Vailati. Plus, when he was still a child, he used to go with a friend, who had a boat, to see the blue sharks in the Adriatic Sea.

So, Gianluca knew that he needed to add two of the things that he loved most besides football – blue sharks and statistics.

One of the most memorable moments for Gianluca was when he had the pleasure to meet Dr. Alessandro de Maddalena, one of the world’s greatest shark experts. With more than 20 books written about sharks, he started publishing the blue shark’s statistics that were provided by Gianluca.

The truth is that Gianluca also takes advantage of his role as a blue sharks statistician to alert people about how human fishing is threatening them.

After all, their fins are used for shark-fin soup and their skin for leather.
