This massive hoard showcases many game used NFL and AFL footballs from the mid 1940’s through the mid 1970’s.

WILLIAMSPORT, PA, January 18, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ — Shawn Vuocolo and his team from Finding Nostalgia, a sports memorabilia and appraisal firm in Williamsport PA, recently secured a significant cache of vintage NFL and AFL footballs from a number of private collectors. The collection spans various eras of Professional Football from the 1940’s to the 1970’s.

Vuocolo stated, “As we began our purchasing trip, we had no idea what was in store for us. When sports treasures are uncovered, such as these footballs, excitement is hard to contain.”

The excitement lies in the understanding that many of these footballs were issued directly to the NFL and AFL teams. Retail purchase of official NFL or AFL footballs was not offered. One of the few methods for securing an official NFL or AFL football was to know someone affiliated with the team.

An example of a rare and compelling football is the 1966 AFL Spalding J5-V football with Oakland Raiders owner, Al Davis, stamped as commissioner. The Davis tenure lasted only 4 months. It represents a snapshot of the time preceding the NFL/AFL merger.

Another example is a white leather Thorp Sporting Goods Wilson NFL football that is dated to 1954. Within the storied history of the NFL, these white leather footballs were utilized for night games until 1956. Footballs of this nature are quite rare and do not become available often.

Vuocolo also offered, “We have never encountered such a substantial amount (39) of Wilson Thorp Sporting Goods NFL Footballs. Not to mention the 15 Spalding AFL Footballs. Quite remarkable.”

There are approximately 85 footballs, in total, being exhibited and offered at Finding Nostalgia.

Finding Nostalgia is an ecommerce site that offers vintage sports memorabilia and appraisals.
